Dutch artist Eelco Hilgersom shares how he creates custom sculptures for luxury interiors. Blending architecture, emotion, and high-end aesthetics in spaces like Tiffany & Co. and The College Hotel.

Art as atmosphere

When I walk into a beautifully designed space, I immediately feel its energy. Whether it's a sleek yacht interior, an elegant boutique, or a boutique hotel lobby, I notice how everything (materials, lighting, flow) speaks to a certain identity.

That’s exactly how I approach my own art. I don’t just create standalone sculptures, I design emotional environments. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with high-end brands, architects, and collectors, curating custom artworks that live and breathe in harmony with their surroundings.

Where it all started

My early background was rooted in both creative expression and analytical thinking. I studied design, but I’ve always had a deep love for biology, architecture, and systems in nature. This led to my signature style - organic shapes, layered materials, and a sculptural rhythm inspired by growth, tension, and flow of nature.

One of the earliest luxury collaborations I did was for Tiffany & Co., where I created several artworks matching the DNA of their brand - refinement, elegance and light.

Tiffany & Co.

For Tiffany, I developed custom pieces that reflected the geometry of diamonds and the fluidity of luxury retail. We worked closely on how the sculptures would interact with light, glass, and branding.

“In luxury, it’s all about subtlety. A sculpture shouldn’t shout; it should whisper with power.”

The College Hotel Amsterdam

This hotel has a historical soul, and I wanted to bring something contemporary that still felt connected to its roots. I installed several sculptures from the Habitat series throughout the hotel, each selected and sized according to the surrounding textures, wall space, and light direction. These aren’t just decorative objects, they're focal points for contemplation and conversation. We’ve seen that visitors don’t just walk by, they pause, observe, and ask questions. That’s when I know the work is doing its job.

The process

Whether I’m working on a residential commission or a corporate space, I follow a clear (but personal) process:

1 Conversation: I listen closely. What’s the emotion you want the space to evoke?

2 Concept design: I sketch and model several ideas based on the architecture and lighting.

4 Preview in space: I create 3D visualizations so you can “see it” before it’s made.

5 Creation & Installation: Every piece is handcrafted and professionally installed.

Why clients choose custom art

When you choose a piece tailored to your space, you’re not just buying art, you’re investing in an emotional atmosphere. My sculptures create a sense of movement, balance, and presence.

Whether it’s for a modern office lobby, a private collector’s villa, hotel, restaurant, showroom or a yacht interior, my goal is always the same: to help the space speak with soul.
